1932 Indian Eagle. MS-65 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. A delightful Gem Uncirculated Indian eagle. The surfaces are originally and carefully preserved with a full endowment of smooth, billowy satin luster. Sharply struck throughout with lovely color in medium golden-wheat. It is perhaps surprising that the Philadelphia Mint delivered a staggering mintage of 4,463,000 ten-dollar gold eagles during this Depression year. Many remained undistributed in government vaults - Q. David Bowers (A Guide Book of Gold Eagle Coins, 2017) writes, "The 1932 $10 was one of 16 earlier-dated gold coins available in Uncirculated condition for face value (plus mailing charge) from the Treasury Department in the summer of 1932." Most of these coins were eventually melted later in the decade, but enough were released that the 1932 ranks as the most available Indian eagle in today's market. Perhaps a million or two were used in international commerce, and American citizens acquired many others from local banks shortly after the gold recall of 1933, as keepsakes from a bygone era in the production and circulation of the nation's gold coinage. Mint State examples were common in private hands within a year or two of striking, therefore, and these were joined by tens of thousands of additional examples repatriated during the second half of the 20th century. As recently as 2010, in fact, Mike Fuljenz (Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century) reported that "a stream of 1932 Eagles [sic] are still being found in overseas sources and are being repatriated to the United States." With the typical example in today's market grading no finer than MS-64 due to bag marks and other signs of handling, premium Gems such as the James A. 1914-S Indian Eagle. AU-58 (PCGS). CMQ. Blushes of iridescent orange-apricot patina enhance otherwise golden-wheat surfaces. Minimally worn and lightly marked from limited commercial use, yet boldly defined in most areas with plenty of satin to softly frosted luster remaining. A well-circulated issue, typical for a San Francisco Mint Indian eagle, most of the 208,000 coins produced for the 1914-S ended up in government melting pots in the late 1930s. Among the survivors of actual commercial use, few are as technically sound and aesthetically appealing as the James A. Stack, Sr. specimen in Choice AU. 1911-S Indian Eagle. AU Details--Cleaned (PCGS). Uncommonly attractive for the assigned grade, both sides retain appreciable mint luster in a satin to softly frosted texture. Color is pleasing in a blend of honey-orange and pinkish-rose, and universally sharp AU detail is also a strong suit. Among the most eagerly sought Indian eagles, the 1911-S boasts one of the lowest circulation strike mintages of the type with only 51,000 coins produced. It is the sixth rarest issue in this series (trailing only the 1920-S, 1933, 1907 Rounded Rim, 1930-S and 1913-S), and enjoys strong numismatic demand at all levels of preservation. 1911 Indian Eagle. Unc Details--Cleaned (PCGS). One of the more readily obtainable Indian eagles in Mint State, the 1911 has a generous mintage of 505,500 coins with a good proportion surviving through export and, especially beginning in the 1970s, repatriation. As such, it is a popular type candidate with collectors seeking to avoid the truly common 1926 and 1932 issues. (The 1910-D is also more plentiful than the 1911 in terms of total number of Mint State coins known.) The present example delivers razor sharp strike detail and vivid orange-gold and lighter olive colors. A bit subdued, and with faint hairlines also explaining the PCGS qualifier, although much of the satin to softly frosted luster is still readily appreciable. Provenance: From the James A. Heavy hairlining and a somewhat matte-like texture explain the PCGS qualifier, but no sizeable or otherwise individually distracting marks assail the eye during in-hand viewing. 1910-S Indian Eagle. AU-53 (PCGS). CAC. Wonderfully original surfaces are lustrous for the grade with a full endowment of rich, vivid, honey-rose color. Although many 1910-S eagles were destroyed through melting in the late 1930s, the mintage of 811,000 pieces was sufficiently generous to ensure the survival of thousands of examples for the benefit of numismatists and other gold enthusiasts. 1910 Indian Eagle. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. The mintage of 318,500 coins for the circulation strike 1910 Indian eagle was thinned out to a great extent by the gold recall of 1933. With many examples melted in 1937, today perhaps just two or three percent of this issue's mintage survive in various grades. Most Mint State survivors are repatriations from foreign bank hoards beginning in the 1940s and 1950s. This was the era of Mr. Stack's most intense gold coin collecting, and in Choice AU the coin he acquired was probably a survivor of limited domestic circulation as opposed to a repatriation. With a limited mintage of 121,540 pieces, which was thinned out by the mass melting of U.S. gold coins in 1937, the 1909-D ranks as one of the scarcer Indian eagle's in the numismatic market. Particularly difficult to locate in attractive Select Uncirculated and higher grades, this premium Choice AU represents a desirable alternative to a heavily abraded and/or lackluster BU example. Dressed in vivid rose-gold color, both sides also deliver bold to sharp strike detail and nearly complete mint luster. A thoroughly PQ coin worthy of strong bids. Provenance: From the James A. 1909 Indian Eagle. MS-62 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. As a Philadelphia Mint issue, the 1909 is one of the more underrated circulation strike Indian eagles. Even though the mintage is limited at 184,789 pieces, most collectors have overlooked this important conclusion drawn by Mike Fuljenz in his 2010 reference Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century: The 1909 date is one of the scarcest Philadelphia Mint issues and it ranks behind only the rare and very expensive 1933, 1907 Wire Edge [sic] and 1907 Rolled Edge [sic] varieties. Offered is a lovely, premium BU example dressed in richly original honey-apricot color. Lustrous, well struck, and sure to catch the eye of astute collectors of Saint-Gaudens gold. 1908-D/D Indian Eagle. Motto. Repunched Mintmark. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC. Pretty deep honey-rose color blends with appreciable mint luster to deliver superior eye appeal at the assigned grade level. Minimally marked, as well, with bold to sharp strike detail throughout the design. Even after all the growing pains experienced getting the 1907 Saint-Gaudens eagle into production, there was one more challenge to be overcome. President Theodore Roosevelt felt that the inclusion of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on coins was sacrilegious and believed he could have the motto left off of the newly-designed coins. The coins without the motto entered circulation in late 1907 and 1908 and immediately caused controversy among members of the public who took up the issue with Congress. In response, Congress passed legislation mandating its inclusion on all coins going forward. Later in 1908, Charles Barber added the motto on both the eagle and double eagle, and also carried out a few other minor modifications. On August 12, the Denver Mint began production of the 1908-D With Motto eagle, eventually coining 836,500 pieces, roughly four times as many as those without the motto. The mintmark was usually hand applied in this period, so numerous minor placement varieties exist; on the present example, the D is clearly repunched, although one will need a loupe to discern this feature. On the 1908-D No Motto coins the D mintmark was very broad and bold, located above the leaves of the branch at the same angle as the rim in that area. When the Motto was added, the mintmark placement was lowered to near the end of the fasces below the leaves, where it remained for the duration of the series. Many of the newly struck With Motto coins entered circulation in the West where gold was generally preferred over paper. They saw frequent use and received the commensurate amount of wear until they were withdrawn from circulation and melted beginning in 1933. As with many of the larger denomination gold coins of the early 20th century, quite a few were used in international commerce where they spent long periods of time in large sacks with other gold coins. Beginning in the 1940s and 1950s and continuing to this day, many of these coins returned from their foreign sojourns. The James A. Stack, Sr. specimen is an early numismatic acquisition for the issue, and also exceptionally attractive compared to the typical circulated survivor. 1908-D/D Indian Eagle. Motto. Repunched Mintmark. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC.

1908 Indian Eagle. Motto. MS-62 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. With a sharp strike and full mint luster, this lightly abraded example delivers solid quality and strong eye appeal for the certified MS-62 grade. Honey-orange color is also highly appealing and speaks volumes about this coin's originality. Augustus Saint-Gaudens' original design for the Indian eagle did not include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST because President Theodore Roosevelt believed it to be sacrilegious. Congress, upset that Roosevelt took this action without their consent, demanded the motto be restored. Chief Engraver Charles Barber modified the dies in 1908 to add it before the eagle's breast on the reverse, where it would remain until 1933. 1908-D Indian Eagle. No Motto. AU Details--Polished (PCGS). As the first Denver Mint Indian eagle, the 1908-D is also the only No Motto issue from this branch mint and the only Indian eagle with the mintmark positioned above the end of the olive branch on the reverse. The mintmark on all other Denver and San Francisco coins is below the end of the olive branch in front of the arrow heads. A mintage of 210,000 pieces is relatively generous by Indian eagle standards, but the 1908-D No Motto similar in rarity to its lower mintage (33,500 pieces) counterpart in the 1908 No Motto. Bright and glossy to explain the PCGS qualifier, this piece also offers bold to sharp strike detail and relatively pleasing orange-gold color on the positive side of the ledger.
